Last week, I attended a discussion with urbanist David Sim, author of my favorite book on cities. He said something that may have surprised many of the architects in the audience.David said that while we may think of glass skyscrapers and cubic office buildings as modern architecture that cities should aspire towards if they want to be part of the global club, that's not actually true anymore.Instead, he claims that these types of buildings and urban spaces belong to an outdated tradition of 20th century architecture and urbanism that we need to rethink and stop following. Then, Martin Majernik sent me a video about how the Bauhaus ideas and the principles of Dieter Rams are still uncritically followed today, and how this leads to bad designs in the light of our current, changed needs and knowledge. No design philosophy should last forever. But today's design and architecture professions often seem stuck in the ideas of 100 years ago. While the Bauhaus movement or the principles of Dieter Rams may have been relevant in their time, we now live in the 21st century. Even Rams himself said that his principles weren't meant to last forever and needed to be updated. Our civilization now has different needs, different priorities, and different knowledge about the human body and mind. It's time to create a new kind of design and architecture. One that prioritizes human well-being, empathy, empowerment, scientific knowledge, and sustainability. And its principles may turn out to be very different from those of the Bauhaus, Rams, or the modernist movement. That's good, that's progress. In our time, designers and architects need to develop the mindset of lifelong openness and multidisciplinary learning. They must be willing to change design paradigms during their lives. Something that has rarely happened in the past. This was one of the reasons why together with Natalia Olszewska, we started the Venetian Letter. We wanted to enable change in architecture and urbanism, based on empathy and evidence. And we wanted to help architects constantly grow by learning from other disciplines and by promoting the new knowledge on which design needs to be based in the 21st century.Times change, and architecture must change too. The modern is not modern anymore. The human and the natural is becoming the future now.#architecture #bauhaus #modernism #biophilia #change

ASK PRESTIGE: A Call for Architectural Beauty and Humanity .As I observe certain real estate development areas in affluent cities, I often find myself questioning the architectural choices made. How can architects believe that residents will thrive in these buildings that sometimes exhibit a surprising level of ugliness? It's astonishing to see how, compared to the aesthetic sensibilities of the 18th century, some modern designs have strayed far from the principles of beauty and livability. The lack of life and soul in these developmental zones does not promote well-being. However, there are architects who possess not just talent, but also a generosity of spirit, infusing their creations with an essence that transcends mere structure. Let's choose architects who, through their art, allow us to journey beyond the ordinary!Hashtags: #ArchitecturalBeauty #HumanCentricDesign #SoulfulSpaces #UrbanWellbeing #ArtInArchitecture
